On March 26, 2008, surgeons at UC San Diego Medical Center carried out a novel procedure called Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) to remove an inflamed appendix through a patient’s vagina. The procedure which took 50-minutes , the patient reported only minor discomfort. This type of removal of diseased organs offers patients a rapid recovery, minimal pain, and no scarring.
